1) What is employee empowerment
What is Employee Empowerment?
Every company strives to be successful, and
it is becoming increasingly challenging with the constantly changing financial
circumstances. Empowering employees is a good method which aids a company to
keep its workforce motivated and focused on a common goal even when the tides
are rough.
Employee empowerment in simple terms means to let employees be their own masters to help an organization achieve its goal (Dobbs, J.,1993). Delegating authority, decision making power or responsibilities according to a preplanned structure, will help a company succeed externally as well as internally.
Why is it important?
Granting individuals, the freedom to take initiative or freedom to contribute actively to their work environment will bring a sense of ownership and influence conduct. They will become more motivated and invested in achieving both organizational and personal goals (Brymer, R.A., 1991).
A
supportive culture which inculcates open communication and a hierarchical
structure which doesn’t encourage a large gap between each level will promote teamwork,
innovation and collaboration. The employees will feel respected and trusted
which will enable them to act innovatively, imagine the big picture and adapt
to the changing situations or to solve problems (Ergeneli, A., 2007). Empowered employees will not
hesitate to take initiatives, or to identify what could be done better at every
situation. They will also be a huge asset to the company as they improve
productivity on their own accord (Conger, J. and Kanungo R., 1988). The organizational culture will improve when
the employees show great teamwork and a higher level of commitment. When the employees have an increased job satisfaction,
they are more likely to enhance overall organizational performance.
Advantages
Employee empowerment may lead to increased job satisfaction, higher levels of commitment, improved productivity, and enhanced overall organizational performance. This approach is presented in theories such as self-determination theory which emphasizes the importance of autonomy and reciprocity in fostering positive employee attitudes and behaviours (Brower, M.,1995). Self-determination theory refers to a person’s own ability to manage themselves, to make confident choices, and to think on their own. A man who is capable of managing himself will be able to take decisions on his own.
Conclusion
In
conclusion, employee empowerment plays an essential role in modern
organizational management by promoting a sense of ownership, teamwork and
motivation amongst employees. By keeping the employees involved in
decision-making processes and by delegating authority, the organizations can utilize
the full potential of employees and create a culture of continuous improvement
and innovation.
